The project \u201ePortraying Countryside in Central European Literature\u201c is supported by Visegrad Fund (www.visegradfund.org<\/a>) and led by the University of Ostrava (Faculty of\u00a0Arts<\/a>) in\u00a0cooperation with the\u00a0Slovak Academy of\u00a0Sciences (Institute of\u00a0Slovak Literature, http:\/\/www.uslit.sav.sk<\/a>) and E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University in\u00a0Budapest (Faculty of\u00a0Humanities, https:\/\/szlav.elte.hu<\/a>).The\u00a0scientific objective of\u00a0the project is to research rural images in\u00a0Central European literature. We wish to follow the\u00a0depiction of\u00a0space, but we also ask questions about the\u00a0importance of\u00a0the theme for individual national literatures in\u00a0various periods, including the\u00a0present. How did literature capture the\u00a0countryside and how does it reflect the\u00a0transformations of\u00a0the countryside in\u00a0the\u00a0modern world? Is the\u00a0situation in\u00a0Central Europe somehow significant? What will the\u00a0comparison of\u00a0rural concepts in\u00a0the\u00a0Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and other environment disclose?The\u00a0so-called spatial studies have been developed at\u00a0the Faculty of\u00a0Arts of\u00a0the University of\u00a0Ostrava for a\u00a0long time. Since 2010 we have been organizing spatial symposia and subsequently, we have published representative publications (3 up to now: Town, Landscape and Nature vs. Industrial), in\u00a0which researchers from the\u00a0Czech Republic and on\u00a0a\u00a0smaller scale from abroad participated (see https:\/\/ff.osu.cz\/kcl\/12510\/prostorova-sympozia<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Now we will develop this in\u00a0the\u00a0forthcoming symposium on\u00a0the\u00a0theme of\u00a0rural areas more internationally to come to a\u00a0comparison that has not yet been made. An\u00a0important practical goal of\u00a0the project is therefore to establish closer cooperation with research institutions in\u00a0the\u00a0V4 countries in\u00a0an\u00a0active way, but also to engage postgraduate students in\u00a0these activities (a workshop for students will be held in\u00a0Bratislava in\u00a0May 2020). Selected PhD students will subsequently participate at\u00a0the scientific symposium which will take place in\u00a0Budapest in\u00a0September 2020. The\u00a0main participants of\u00a0the symposium will be invited researchers from the\u00a0Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland etc. Their contributions will be elaborated as chapters of\u00a0the upcoming book entitled \u201eCountryside: Representation of\u00a0rural space in\u00a0literature\u201c. So, the\u00a0students will have the\u00a0opportunity to present their work to foreign colleagues and be inspired by their (possibly different) approaches.<\/p>\n
